The Douro International
The Douro International Natural Park, also known as Arribas do Douro is a natural park that covers the entire area where the Douro River borders Portugal and Spain, in northeast Portugal.
It is one of the most rugged regions and with more mountains in the country, and a place still hidden on the border. A landscape of wild but overwhelming beauty.
The historical heritage of this region is incredibly rich, with a unique culture to discover, and amazing trails to cover on foot, or in a 4WD adventure, that allows us to reach unique places. There is also delicious gastronomy to be tasted, paired with the wines of this region. And last but not least, here you will discover a different language – Mirandês – officially recognized as the second language spoken in Portugal.
We invite you to travel and discover this less-known and beautifully wild Douro, travel along these impressive roads, and contemplate the landscape through the many viewpoints you can find on your way. These are places to enjoy silence.
Miradouro São João das Arribas (Miranda do Douro)
From here you have one of the most dramatic views of Douro International. We say dramatic because its beauty is so intense and disturbing. This viewpoint is next to the Aldeia Nova hillfort, dating from the Iron Age. Traces of Roman presence indicate that it was also used by the Romans as a passage path.
Miradouro da Fraga de Puio (Picote-Miranda do Douro)
A viewpoint that looks to be suspended over the Douro River. The landscape is marked by a tight curve over the Douro River, which flows encased on this impressive cliff (more than 200 meters high), which established the political border between Portugal and Spain.
Miradouro de Vale de Águia /Castrilhouço (Miranda do Douro)
Located close to the Vale de Águia hillfort, built in the Iron Age. A beautiful natural viewpoint, an elbow cliff, overlooking the Douro River. The cliffs reach around 150 meters high.
Miradouro da Penha das Torres (Miranda do Douro)
It is the most eastern place in Portugal, where the sun rises earlier. From this viewpoint, we can see the Douro River entering Portugal, beginning its journey as an international river. A perfect place to see the sunrise in all its fullness and be surprised with one of the most magnificent views of the Douro.
Miradouro de São Gabriel (Vila Nova Foz Côa)
Located in Vila Nova de Foz Côa, famous for a series of rock paintings and carvings dating back to the Upper Paleolithic times, discovered along the banks of the Côa River. From this viewpoint, we overlook the entire region, from the Marofa mountain range, with Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo on the horizon, and reaching Spain.
Miradouro de Penedo Durão (Freixo de Espada à Cinta)
It is located on the right bank of the Douro River, overlooking the Spanish dam of Saucelle, and presents us with a magnificent view of the landscape. Below we can see, shaped in the mountain, the road from Freixo de Espada à Cinta to Barca d’Alva.
As you can see, there are plenty of reasons to choose Douro International as one of the destinations to visit in 2021. Contact our team to know more about this destination or to help you design a dream experience in Portugal.
