Porto: Proudly Tripeiros (tripe-eaters) for 600 years

Anyone visiting Porto will quickly notice that the city’s inhabitants are referred to as ‘tripeiros’ (tripe-eaters). But why this name? To uncover the answer, we must journey back in time.

The Legend

Tripeiro-1

The most popular legend dates back to the 15th century, during the Age of Discoveries. At that time, King João I and Prince Henry (who would later be known as the Navigator), secretly orchestrated the conquest of Ceuta in 1415. Unaware of the plan and the reason behind the construction of so many ships, the people of Porto expressed their unwavering support of Henry, who hailed from the city and played a key role in the mission.

The unwavering support of the city’s inhabitants is evident in the sacrifices they made for Prince Henry’s vision. It is said that, at the time, all the meat in Porto was supplied to the ships preparing for the journey, leaving only the entrails behind.

As a result, the city experienced a severe food shortage during that time, so these were used as food for those who remained in the city.

Though many years have gone by, the legend endures, passed along through generations, as does the nickname ‘tripeiros,’ by which the people of Porto are still known. While the origin of the term may be unknown to some, it is proudly embraced by a city with a deep-rooted resilience and a unique, unwavering love for its homeland.

If you visit Porto and ask a local if they’re proud to be a tripeiro (trip-eater), you can be sure the answer will be a strong ‘Of course!’
